Argyle House School is built on strong family values, creating a safe, nurturing, and welcoming environment where every child feels part of a wider school community.

This sense of belonging is central to how we teach and support our pupils, helping them grow into confident, well-rounded individuals equipped to succeed in an ever-changing world.

Our foundation

Work conquers all

We believe education should be enjoyable, motivating, and ambitious. Guided by our school motto, “Work Conquers All,” we encourage children to embrace our core values of being Responsible, Reflective, Resourceful, Resilient, and Reasoning. These qualities are developed through the dedication of our staff, our small class sizes, and the excellent facilities available to our pupils.

Our aim is to offer the opportunities and resources of a larger school while maintaining the close knit, personalised feel of a smaller one. This allows every child to flourish academically, socially, emotionally, and physically supported, challenged, and recognised as an individual.

Our heritage

Nearly 150 years of excellence

Founded in 1884, Argyle House School has a long and proud heritage at the heart of Sunderland and the wider North East community. Originally established by Mr Hanna, the school has been shaped by generations of dedicated family leadership, evolving through several relocations within Sunderland before settling at its current Thornhill Park site. Over the decades, Argyle House has grown from a traditional boys’ school into a thriving co educational setting, continuing to expand its facilities and curriculum.

Now part of the Forfar Education Group, the school remains deeply connected to its Sunderland roots while embracing modern developments, including the launch of Little Crickets Sunderland, reflecting nearly 150 years of educational excellence in the North East.
