Reception at Argyle House School provides a caring and purposeful beginning to every child’s educational journey.
Our focus is on helping children develop confidence, curiosity and independence as they settle into school and begin to explore the world around them. We create an environment where pupils feel secure, supported and excited to learn each day.
Life in Reception
Reception is full of memorable moments. Children speak with enthusiasm about making new friends, exploring the outdoors, taking part in Welly Walks and enjoying Mystery Reader visits. They also take part in a wide range of trips throughout the year, including visits to museums, wetlands, forests, farms and the theatre.
Life in Reception is varied and joyful. Our pupils enjoy nativity performances, the carol service, swimming, French lessons, singing, piano, PE, sports day, ballet, art, model making and many other creative activities. They also treasure the everyday experiences that make childhood special, such as celebrating birthdays, catching snowflakes, kicking autumn leaves, riding bikes and even meeting the local fire brigade.
A smooth transition from Nursery to School
Nursery and Reception children spend regular time together to ensure continuity and a seamless progression when pupils move up. Joint sessions include PE, swimming, outdoor learning, story time and music. The children share meals, take part in visits and, in the summer term, Nursery pupils are introduced to playing in the Big Yard with the support of older buddies. This helps them feel confident and familiar with new routines.
Children joining us from other settings also benefit from a structured transition. They visit the classroom, meet their peers, participate in activities and attend a whole school transition day before starting in September. Families are welcomed to a dedicated Reception information session to ensure they feel fully prepared for the year ahead.
Our Early Years Curriculum
The Reception curriculum
The Reception year follows the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. This curriculum supports learning through play and recognises that every child is an individual with their own interests and developmental path.
The curriculum is organised into seven Areas of Learning.
Area of learning
Prime Areas
- Communication and Language
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Physical Development
Specific Areas
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Assessment and celebration
Teachers track progress throughout the year through observation, parent feedback and some formal assessments. The Early Years Foundation Stage Profile is completed at the end of the summer term.
To mark this important milestone, we hold a special Graduation Assembly in July where we celebrate each child’s achievements and their readiness for the next stage of school.
Part of a continuing journey
One of the strengths of Argyle House School is the continuity we offer. Children who begin their journey in Reception are supported and encouraged as they move through the school.
Staff take great pride in watching pupils grow into confident young learners who go on to flourish across the Prep years and beyond. Reception is only the beginning, and each step builds towards a successful and rewarding school experience.
